Online-Discussion: Drawing red lines on Ukraine aid

FES-SK in cooperation with the portal Euractiv Slovensko organized an online-discussion on the topic of military aid to Ukraine from the West and the change of the allies' support strategy.

As Kyiv was critically running out of ammo, its allies were pushed to update their support strategy to enable it to push back against Kremlin’s aggression. According to experts, the Ukrainian counteroffensive from summer 2023 failed due to undelivered military equipment from its allies.

From the beginning, the West has been setting restrictions on how far it will go in its arm supplies – for example, Germany was initially willing to send helmets only. However, as the time went by, the West did break most of its self-imposed limits, sending lethal weapons, from tanks to fighter jets to Ukraine. Why draw the red lines on Ukraine aid when all of them are eventually crossed? Isn’t the West reluctance causing Ukrainians damage which could have been prevented with a more decisive approach? Will the motion of sending Western troops to Ukraine be another example of an initially denied idea coming to reality? These and other questions were discussed by Rüdiger Heinrich, Defense Attaché of the Federal Republic of Germany accredited in the Slovak Republic, Matúš Halás, Senior Researcher at IIR and Member of the Centre for European Politics and Veronika Zweifelhofer Čáslavová, CEO, Security Outlines.
