Online Discussion: European Economy in Trump's World

As Europe confronts the second Trump presidency, economic challenges and strategic uncertainties have emerged that require swift adaptation. EuroPolicy civic association, EURACTIV Slovakia, and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Bratislava hosted an online discussion titled "European Economy in Trump's World" on March 18, 2025, bringing together experts to address these pressing concerns. The online discussion addressed how Europe could maintain its global economic standing amid America's shift toward protectionist policies and an increasingly unpredictable transatlantic relationship.

As traditional alliances evolved and global economic power dynamics shifted, this conversation offered valuable insights into the strategic choices facing European policymakers, businesses, and citizens in responding to America's changing role in the global economy. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for Europe's future prosperity and its position in an increasingly multipolar world.

The European Union found itself at a critical juncture, facing external pressures from U.S. tariffs and trade restrictions while simultaneously managing internal challenges including Germany's economic stagnation, escalating energy costs, and growing political fragmentation across the continent. The discussion tackled the central question of how the EU should recalibrate its economic approach to preserve its position as a global power while navigating this shifting geopolitical landscape. Panelists discussed the anticipated impacts on European priorities including free trade agreements, Green Deal initiatives, energy diversification efforts, industrial competitiveness, and technology regulation frameworks.

Renowned experts brought diverse perspectives to this crucial conversation. The panel featured Michal Wiezik, Member of the European Parliament from Renew Europe/PS; Alžběta Rücklová, head of Americas Unit at the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic; Knut Panknin, Representative of Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, Washington Office; and Martin Kahanec, Founder and Scientific Director of the Central European Labour Studies Institute. Lucia Lauková, Editor of EURACTIV Slovakia moderated this discussion.
